The New Mexico Military Institute Colt soccer team has ended their regular season at 17-1-1 and currently predicted to be the second seed to start state playoff play. The only team ahead of NMMI in the A/AAA projected standings is the Bosque Bobcats.

The Colts started their season strong, marking a 3-0 record and holding opponents to two goals while scoring 16 of their own. NMMI recorded a tie against 5A Clovis and a 1-0 loss in the Semi-Final game of the Coyote Classic against 5A Carlsbad. At this point of the season the Colts were 4-1-1.

Since the Coyote Classic, the Colts have gone 13-0, including a perfect 6-0 in district play to earn the District 3 title.

NMMI has scored 72 goals on the season and only given up 15 over those 19 games played, good for a 3.8 scoring average and 0.8 goals against.

In district contests, NMMI has allowed just three goals while accumulating 16 goals on offense.

Junior mid-fielder Daniel Angulo leads NMMI in the goals-scored tally with 19 on the year, including a hat-trick in a match against Lovington on August 27th. The other Colt to reach double-digit goals on the season is sophomore forward John Zimmerman with 11 goals.

Frank Olcott led the Colts in assists with eight, while Angulo has five assists to lead the team with 43 points (two points for each goal scored and one for each assist).

Junior goalkeeper Allen Varela led the Colts with 74 saves on the year and a .762 goals against average. He’s collected five shutouts this season, including two during district play.

“Colt soccer has had a great season,” said NMMI head coach John Barbour. “We have put in the work to finish undefeated in district play and carry the best overall record in Class A-AAA.  It is all up to the committee and we hope to earn the No. 1 seed going in to the state tournament.  Regardless, we are focusing on what we can control and will practice hard next week to prepare for whomever we face at the State Tournament.  Our team is looking forward to representing NMMI and we hope to make a deep run in the tournament which is held this year at the Bernallio Soccer Complex in Albuquerque.”

The New Mexico Activities Association seeding selection committee for the 2019 Class A-AAA State Championships will show exactly where NMMI will stand on Sunday, Oct. 27th.
