Doerhoefer began his career at NMMI in 1986 as an assistant golf pro. He returned in 2006 to take the helm of the Bronco golf program until 2010.

The Broncos were ranked eighth in the nation in 2010 and had one of the top junior college recruiting classes in 2011.

Doerhoefer attended NMMI's junior college program from 1982-1983 and played golf under former head coach Sonny Wiginton. 

He was hired as an assistant in 2010. Eight years later, he completed a PGAM 2.0 program. In May of 2019, Doerhoefer was hired as the general manager of NMMI Golf Course.

Since 2019, he has been the head coach of the Colt golf program.

Doerhoefer grew up in Minnesota, but he's been an on and off lifelong resident of Roswell as he graduated from Goddard High School in 1982. 

He obtained an associate's degree from Eastern New Mexico University-Roswell. 

Doerhoefer also has a private commercial pilot's license.
