Broncos scare #2 Kilgore College in return to Wool Bowl

The New Mexico Military Institute Bronco football team gave the #2 Kilgore College Rangers a scare at the Wool Bowl on Saturday with the Rangers winning the game 35-26.

Kilgore got the scoring started on a one-yard touchdown run for a 7-0 lead with 8:26 left in the first quarter. NMMI kicker Roland Tyson answered the touchdown with two field goals. The first was hit from 30 yards with 2:15 left in the first quarter and the other one from 35 yards to make the score 7-6 with 11:36 left in the half. Kilgore would get a touchdown in the closing seconds of the first half to head into the locker room leading 13-6.

NMMI scored first in the second half on a pass from Brylon Grice to Kevon Purnell from 17 yards out for a 13-13 tie game with 4:18 left in the third quarter. On the ensuing drive, Kilgore would find their way into the end zone to go back up 20-13 with 36 seconds on the scoreboard.

Grice got his second passing touchdown of the night completing a pass to Taylin Nalls for a 24-yard touchdown. NMMI went for two but could not convert leaving Kilgore with a 20-19 lead with 9:05 left in the game. The last Bronco score was a Bronte Griffin reception from Grice to make the score 28-26 Kilgore with 3:18 to go. The Rangers scored a touchdown with 50 seconds left to cap off the Ranger victory 35-26.

Head Bronco football coach Joe Forchtner was disappointed with the lose he was pleased with the improvement of his team this week.

Forchtner said, "Compared to last week's team tonight's was a night and day difference. If we keep improving like we did this week and handle what we need to handle I think we will be pretty good. We are still trying to figure out what we are good at right now and I think it took us into the second half of the third game to figure that out."

The Broncos next game will be in Colorado Springs, CO against Air Force Prep on Friday Sept. 13th at 1 PM MDT. The next Bronco football game at the Wool Bowl will not be until Sept. 28th with Tyler Junior College heading into Roswell. Kickoff for the home game will be at 7:00 PM MDT.
