New Mexico Military Institute Colt head football coach Randy Montoya said his team needs to forget Friday night’s 48-0 loss to Fort Sumner/House.

“Learn fast and push forward,” Montoya stated after the Colts’ opened the 2018 campaign on the NMMI campus in Roswell.

During the first quarter the Colts held the Foxes in check, but in the second period the visiting team scored 34 points as junior quarterback Jude Segura threw touchdown passes to Noah Maxwell, Kane Burney and Francisco Chavez.

In the third quarter, Segura found Chavez again and the Fox defense recovered a Daniel Xibille fumble to give the visiting side some insurance.

Turnovers by the offense were a concern for Montoya as the Colts had five fumbles and the Foxes were able to pick up three of the miscues. NMMI quarterback Jasper Best had one interception too.

Despite the offensive troubles, Montoya saw a positive in the Colts defensive play. NMMI gave up 128 net yards rushing and 218 net yards passing.

“The defense, we hung in there,” Montoya said. “There were some positive things, we’ve got to get better.”

Coming into the season Montoya’s goals were, “to have a team that’s competitive and win some games.”

Best completed two passes for 11 yards and the Colt running game had 26 carries for 74 net yards. Roswell junior Gus Curnutt was the leading rusher with 10 carries for 45 yards.

The Colts return to action Aug. 31 hosting Capitan. Between now and then, Montoya and his squad will get back to work.

“And correct things we are doing wrong,” Montoya said.
