The New Mexico Military Institute Colt football team evened up their record, 1-1, by defeating the visiting Capitan Tigers [0-2] at home on Colt Field.

Neither offense could get points on the board in the first quarter, but in the second quarter the Colts struck first.

After the Colts stopped the Tigers fourth down on their own eight yard line, Gus Curnutt ran it into the end zone for a Colt touchdown to give them a 6-0 lead with 5:56 to go in the half. Curnutt would strike pay-dirt for a second time with 2:56 to go in the half, on an 18 yard rush to give the Colts a 12-0 lead at the half.

In the third quarter Jasper Best plunged past the goal line on a three-yard quarterback keeper, increasing the Institute lead, 19-0,with 2:59 to go in the third quarter.

Capitan would get a couple of touchdowns in the fourth quarter, including a score at the very end of the game after a forward fumble was recovered by the Tigers in the end zone. But NMMI survived the last-quarter Tiger onslaught to earn their first ‘W’ of the season, 19-12.

 “I was very happy with the start,” said head Colt football coach Randy Montoya, “but we need to finish better. I was not happy with the last quarter of play. But we’ll take the ‘W’ any chance we get.”

Coach Montoya was quite pleased with his team’s running game, and noted the improvement overall from last week’s loss to Fort Sumner.

“Our running backs ran hard and our offensive line did a great job in giving them holes. Hopefully we continue to get better each week. It’s just going to take time.”

Up next for the Colts will be their first road game of the year against the Texico Wolverines [1-1] on Friday, September 9th at 7:00 PM.
