Charlie Ward enters his 22nd season as Colt head baseball coach. Ward has been coaching at NMMI since 1998.

The Alpine, Texas native also serves as an assistant Colt football coach.

In 2000, he took over as the head Colt baseball coach where he’s amassed a career record of 322-263 for a .550 winning percentage.

With the Colt baseball team, he won back-to-back Class 3A state championships in 2001 and 2002, coached in the 2004 and 2010 North/South 3A All-Star games and the Class 4A South All-Star team in 2017.

As head coach, his teams have made the regional playoffs in 2001 and 2002, the first round of the state playoffs in 2003, 2007, 2008, 2010 and 2014-2019, the state quarterfinals in 2006, 2008, 2011-2014, 2017 and 2021, and the state semifinals in 2001, 2002, 2014, 2019 and 2021.

Before coming to NMMI, he was the football, basketball and track head coach at Mesa Middle School from 1990 to 1998 as well as the girls head basketball coach 1990 to 1992.

He served as the head track coach at Hagerman High School from 1987 to 1990 as well as the head volleyball coach from 1986 to 1987, assistant football coach from 1985-1990 and the football, basketball and track head coach at Hagerman Middle School from 1985-1990.

Ward is a 1979 graduate of Alpine High School and a 1984 grad of Sul Ross State University in Alpine, Texas, where he earned his bachelor’s degree.

He has three sons, Robert, Raymond and Charlie III, a daughter, Misty and 11 grandchildren.
