Broncos take fifth in Hobbs, Alvarez places second

HOBBS — After not getting a chance to compete last school year due to state health guidelines, the New Mexico Military Institute Bronco cross country team got back onto the course, Friday, Sept. 24, for the season-opening New Mexico Junior College Invitational.

Eight schools ranging from the junior college, NAIA to the NCAA Division II level competed in the meet.

Maritza Alvarez led the way for the Broncos, finishing second with a time of 20:17.15.

MaLena Espinosa rounded out the top 20 by clocking in a 21:53.27 while Mia Walker placed 25th overall with a time of 22:24.15.

NMJC won the event, one point ahead of Lubbock Christian. NMJC also had the top finisher as Daisy Jerop narrowly finished ahead of Alvarez with a time of 20:14.51.

The Broncos return to Hobbs for the second NMJC Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 16 at 10 a.m. before heading off to the Region V Championship in Snyder, Texas on Oct. 30.
