Broncos lose in five set classic against Wranglers

In a battle of top ten teams in the NJCAA, the Odessa College Wranglers [25-1, 7-1] defeated the New Mexico Military Institute Broncos [29-3, 7-1] in a five set classic (25-23, 22-25, 25-19, 19-25, 7-15) at Cahoon Armory gym on Saturday.

The Broncos and Wranglers went back and forth during the beginning of the first set. NMMI went on a 4-0 run down 8-5 to pull ahead 9-8. The Broncos closed out the first set on a 7-1 run to take the 25-23 victory.

In the second set, NMMI took a 4-2 lead. Odessa kept the match within one or two points, then knotted the score, 11-11. After the Wranglers took a 13-12 lead, NMMI took a time out, but Odessa managed to maintain their lead until eventually earning the 25-22 win.

In Set 3, the Broncos collected a 10-1 run while down 16-12 to take a 22-17 lead. NMMI finished the third set a with a 25-19 win.

Odessa took the final two sets 19-25 and 7-15. Odessa had an 8-1 run in the fourth set and a 10-0 run in the fifth set after the Broncos scored the first point.

Next up for NMMI is at Midland College on October 23rd at 6 p.m. Their next match back at home in the Cahoon Armory will be on Oct. 26 against Frank Phillips College at 2:00 p.m.
