The NMMI Bronco volleyball team upped their conference record to 2-0 as they swept Frank Phillips in three sets 25-18, 25-23, 25-19. 

"We started off really strong in the first game and then we played a typical game two for us, which is getting behind, making errors, and sometimes wining the games," said coach Shelby Forchtner.  

NMMI was down early as Frank Phillips opened up the second set 5-0, but the Broncos went on to win the match 25-23, thanks in large part to Megan Martinez who finished the match with five kills on eight attempts – most of those kills coming as NMMI rallied from that opening deficit. 

"We need to get in some type of rhythm to where we are playing the rest of the game like we do in game one. We need more energy and offensive firepower, which is weird because we have all the tools that we need offensively and we are not playing at a high level," said Forchtner. 

The Broncos will have to up their level of play this weekend at the Southern Nevada Tournament. 

They are scheduled to play Seward County, Snow College, Glendale Community College and Salt Lake Community College – all ranked teams in this week's NJCAA National Volleyball Poll. 

"This will be a really high level tournament and we are excited to play because the one game we played really consistently was against a national ranked team. We have won some games and I hope they will feed off of that energy, but usually when they see a team as good as they are, they seem to play better," said Forchtner.  

NMMI is now 12-2 on the season and those wins have built confidence as the team heads into the Southern Nevada Tournament 

Said Forchtner, "I am hoping that we go into this weekend with that type of mentality so we can knock some people off." 

The Broncos will take on ninth-ranked Seward County in the opening round – match scheduled to start at 6:00 PM MDT in Las Vegas, Nevada.
