The New Mexico Military Institute Lady Colt volleyball team lost in three sets to the Hondo Valley Eagles on opening day of the Warrior Invitational Friday.

This was the third time that the two teams have met during the young season, and the 26-24, 25-20, 25-18 victory was the second for the Eagles.

The Lady Colts came out of pool play as the No. 2 seed on their side of the pool.

NMMI had its chances to get the momentum in the first set against Hondo Valley, but gave up a 5-point lead to late in the match for Hondo to take the set 26-24.

The second and third sets were similar to each other as the score indicated. Hondo Valley would get a run of four or five and the Lady Colts would get a run of two or three to give the Eagles the victory in the two competitive sets.

Coach Stephanie Schooley was proud of her team's effort, but also said they can improve.

“I’m proud of the girls hustle today, but I want them to be more consistent," she said. "It seems like we do well for two or three points and then not so good for four or five points. Once we can put it together I feel like we can make some progress.”

The Lady Colts next match in the Warrior Invitational will be tomorrow at 8:30 a.m. against Lake Arthur. The winner will move on to the consolation championship game at 12:30 p.m.
