On Thursday evening the Lady Colt basketball team (12-4) ended their season on a winning note as they defeated Artesia “C” for the second time this season 49-29.

NMMI used a strong inside game, netting their first four buckets from inside the paint.  Freshman guard Tianna Tsosie scored constitutive baskets to give the Lady Colts a 9-2 lead with three minutes remaining in the first quarter.

“Tianna kept us in the game the first half,” said head coach Marisha Olesinski. “We did not make the easy shots like we usually do.”

Artesia responded with three buckets of their own to end the quarter trailing the Lady Colts by one, 9-8.

The second quarter was back and forth as NMMI and Artesia traded buckets until the buzzer sounded for halftime.

Tsosie continued to shoot the ball well as she scored all seven points for the Lady Colts in the second quarter.

The score was tied 16-16 heading into halftime.

With one half left to play, NMMI came out and dominated the remainder of the game.

Demitra Ulibarri scored eight points in the third quarter to give the Institute the lead 29-25 heading into the fourth.

Stellar defense by the Lady Colts turned into an offensive outburst, which allowed NMMI to go on a 20-4 run to end the game 49-29.

“I think our entire team played well tonight,” said head coach Marisha Olesinski. “They all stepped up and played great defense.”

Tsosie led all scorers with 20 points and Ulibarri added 16 of her own.

NMMI will be graduating three seniors Abigail Valadez, Sashkia Pena and Flor Toscano.

“We are going to miss our seniors tremendously,” said Olesinski. "They are incredible young women.”
