The Colts dethroned the defending state champions Las Vegas Robertson by a score of 5-4 to bring the A-AAAA state title back to Roswell on Saturday in Albuquerque.

NMMI started off their winning ways by taking a 2-1 lead in the doubles portion of the team championships.

“Having a 2-1 lead heading into singles play was very important,” said head coach John Barbour. “We knew we needed to win two of the three to have a shot.”

NMMI took their momentum from doubles into singles leading 4-1 with four matches left.

Robertson went on to tie the score at 4-4 with the state championship coming down to #1 singles.

Despite losing the first set, Farid Yunes stormed back winning the last two sets against 8th grader Nico Fulgenzi.

“They had a wonderful match and both of them played hard,” said Barbour. “You want it to be close and our guys were on the losing end of it last year and they had a desire to become a state champion.”

NMMI graduates five seniors and will look to repeat as state champions in 2019.
