The Colt Tennis team won the District 4-4A team tournament Tuesday with their third overwhelming victory against cross-town rival Goddard.

The first two times the teams met in dual competition, NMMI won all six singles and all three doubles matches. The only difference this time was No. 3 doubles, where the team of senior Nicholas VanLue and junior Fabrizio Cano fell in three sets in a long, back-and-forth affair.

NMMI's No. 1 singles player, senior Jose Nadal, moved to 11-0 on the year with his third straight-set win over Goddard's Grant Janway.

Junior Fernando Mier moved to 8-0 in singles competition, with seven of his wins coming at the No. 2 position and one victory from the top spot. No. 3 junior Santiago Perez moved to 9-0 in singles play, with two wins coming from the 2-spot.

The No. 1 doubles team of Nadal and Mier also remained undefeated, as did the No. 2 pair of Perez and sophomore Mason Hicks. Hicks is 7-2 in No. 4 singles matches and 2-0 from the 3-spot.

NMMI head tennis coach Chad Mann said he has high hopes for his group as the state tournament approaches. While the Institute hasn't had the chance to see some of the northern teams that typically excel in the sport, he's heard that Santa Fe Prep and perennial power Albuquerque Academy have good squads.

The District 4-4A individual tournament begins at 9 a.m. Saturday at the NMMI Tennis Courts.

The state competition in Albuquerque takes place May 3-6, with individual championships on the 3-4 and the team title matches on the 5-6. First round and quarterfinal matches will be held at Albuquerque Academy and semifinals and finals at the Jerry Cline Tennis Complex.
