Enduring through the worst, Jermane Carter soldiered on through his sophomore season, making 10 starts and averaging 11.4 points per game with the New Mexico Military Institute Bronco basketball team.

For the second straight year, Carter earned Western Junior College Athletic Conference honorable mention honors.

"I kind of went through a lot this year with the face fracture and the concussion and some other lingering things," said Carter. "It kind of showed me how much strength I had and support from friends and family, especially my team and my coaches."

Despite only appearing in 18 games of the Broncos' 29 contests this season, Carter had 10 games where he scored in double-digit scoring figures.

He scored a season-high 23 points against New Mexico Junior College on Feb. 6. Carter had a repeat performance in a 79-71 victory over Frank Phillips College on Feb. 17 where he dropped 22 points.

Carted averaged 4.8 rebounds a game as he grabbed a season-high nine boards during a play-in game against Western Texas College on March 2.

In the WJCAC, he ranked 12th in offensive rebounds with 39.

He also had 21 assists, 20 steals and 14 blocks. Carter had a season-high four assists during an 85-68 win over Frank Phillips College on Jan. 16.

"Jermane is a tremendous young man and has gone through so much adversity this year," said NMMI head coach Sean Schooley. "He really felt terrible all season when he was sitting on the bench because he knew what he was able to contribute to the team.

"He's a great athlete, he's a hard worker. Somebody at the next level is gonna be fortunate to have him because of all those things that come together. His work ethic really speaks volumes about him."

NMMI assistant coach Will Joyce added: "This team was basically based off Jermane. Being the person he is, he never gives up. Jermane continued to fight."

Carter averaged 9.9 points per game as a freshman as he scored a season-high 17 points on four different occasions.

"I think everything happens for a reason. We were smaller and we still had people that could pull it off," Carter said. "I think overall it went really well especially based off last years' experience.

"It was a tremendous experience. I'm just glad I got to make it that far with the team this year. Everyone wanted it. We just came up a little short in the end."
