Kurt Taufa’asau enters his third season as the Broncos’ head coach.

Taufa’asau was named the interim head football coach for the Broncos prior to the 2021 season. The interim tag was lifted on Nov. 20 after capturing the Southwest Junior College Football Conference championship with a 45-10 win.

This marked NMMI's first SWJCFC championship in program history.

The Broncos competed in the first-ever NJCAA national playoffs and defeated third-seeded Northwest Mississippi to earn a birth in the title game where they defeated top-seeded Iowa Western 31-13 to capture the 2021 NJCAA Division I National Championship, the first in the school’s history.

Taufa’asau coordinated the 2021 defense that finished the season second in the nation in interceptions with 19, sixth in touchdowns scored with four, seventh in points allowed per game with 17.2 and eighth in fumble recoveries with 13.

Taufa’asau was named the 2021 American Community College Football Coaches Association Coach of the Year in addition to NJCAA Coach of the Year and SWJCFC Coach of the Year.

During the 2021 campaign, Taufa’asau helped produce four NJCAA All-Americans and 23 SWJCFC All-Conference players including Most Valuable Player (Tyrone Webber) and Offensive Player of the Year (Anthony Grant).

In 2022, the Broncos followed up their national title season with a 9-3 effort that included an appearance in the SWJCFC Championship and a bowl victory at home, 28-26 over No. 11 Lackawanna in the rebooted Wool Bowl.

Taufa’asau, a native of American Samoa, played for NMMI in 2009 under former head coach Jeff Lynn before moving on to the University of Wyoming where he played football and earned a bachelor’s in sociology in 2012. From 2013-2015, Taufa’asau spent time on several NFL practice squads.

Taufa’asau served as the defensive line coach at Westlake High School in Saratoga Springs, Utah in 2015 before returning to the Institute in 2016 to fill the same position. In 2019, he was promoted to Assistant Head Coach in addition to his defensive line duties. During that season, the Broncos made the SWJCFC championship game for the first time after just four seasons in the league.

As a Bronco player, Taufa’asau earned first team All-Western States Football League honors as a defensive lineman in 2009. NMMI posted a 7-4 record to earn an appearance in the Central Bank Salt City Bowl, falling 22-14 to Hutchinson Community College. Taufa’asau was credited with four tackles. The Broncos finished the season ranked 20th in the final national poll and the defense finished 20th in pass defense, allowing just 153.3 yards per game.
