John O'Mera returns to lead Colt Football in 2023 nearly two decades after leaving Old Post and finding major success at the junior college level.

O'Mera's coaching career began in 1991 at Las Cruces High School in Las Cruces, N.M. where he spent a year coaching running backs. His first stint at the Institute began in 1993 as defensive coordinator and linebackers coach for the Colts. He moved up to head coach the next season and enjoyed four winning campaigns during a time when the Institute's high school football program was independent and not allowed to compete in the state playoffs.

In 1998, O'Mera was named head coach of the junior college football program and led the Broncos to an Empire State Bowl win over Nassau, 26-11. It was the first NMMI bowl victory since 1977.

After six seasons, O'Mera took the head job at Eastern Arizona College, where he orchestrated 13 winnings seasons in 14 years, compiling 143 victories to 91 losses, putting him at No. 21 on the all-time junior college football wins list.

When EAC folded it's program after the 2018 season, O'Mera made successful one-year coaching stops at Safford High in Arizona and Capitan High in N.M. before dipping back into the college ranks at rival Cisco College for a season.

O'Mera began his higher education at the University of Oklahoma before transferring to Western New Mexico University in Silver, N.M. where he played fullback for his father and earned a bachelor's degree in special education and physical education. Later, he earned a master's degree in education from Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, AZ.

O'Mera is from Meridian, Idaho, and his wife D'Anna is from Roswell and is head of the new NMMI Intermediate Preparatory Academy. The couple have two children, son Bryant and daughter Crimson.
