The New Mexico Military Institute Colt football team defeated the Tucumcari Rattlers 43-14 on Friday at Rattler Stadium in Tucumcari, NM.

The Colts started the game by stopping the Rattlers in their own territory and forcing them to punt. The next play after the punt the Colts scored on a 52 yard run to give them a 7-0 lead. The Colts defense would step up when it needed to for the next two Rattler drives. NMMI forced two fumbles inside their own five yard line to give the offense the ball. The offense took the ball 94 and 80 yards for touchdown after the fumbles to give the Colts a 21-0 lead.

NMMI scored on their next possession going 80 yards on 14 plays capped off by a three yard touchdown run by Lance Miller to make the score 28-7 Colts with 2:39 left in the second quarter.

With 13 seconds left in the first half Jasper Best found Charles Lewis for a 22 yard touchdown to go into half time up 35-7.

Neither team scored in the third quarter, but the Colts did score in the fourth quarter on a Jalil Brown 48 yard touchdown scamper. Jasper Best would get a two point conversion after a bad snap on the extra point attempt to go up and win the game 43-14.

Jalil Brown was the leading rusher for the Colts gaining 192 yards on nine carries. He also caught two passes for 22 yards. Charles Lewis ran for 83 yards on 10 attempts and a touchdown. He also had two receptions for 29 yards and a touchdown.

Head Colt football coach Randy Montoya gave his whole team credit for the victory.

“The kids came out blazing and did a terrific job out there today. The offensive line created holes for Brown and Lewis. The passing game got a few completions during the game and the defense got a couple of turnovers when Tucumcari was about to score I am very happy for the guys tonight.”

The Colts await to see where they will be in the playoff bracket as they will find out their opponent on Saturday night.

Montoya’s thoughts on the teams playoff seeding. “I think we are in, but nothing is guaranteed. I like our chances of making the state tournament, but we are in a tough district. We will see where the seeding committee puts us on Saturday night.”
