Hawks bats too much for Broncos

BIG SPRING, Texas — It was another rough day for the Bronco baseball team Saturday, as they were swept by Howard College (21-9, 6-2), losing 17-7 and 13-5.

NMMI (17-7, 2-6) had its chances, but couldn't hold on beyond the early innings in either game.

In the opener, the Institute went up 4-0 in the first when Edwin Martinez Pagani singled, Rudy Solis walked, Mario Chacon singled to drive in Martinez Pagani then Gavon Clemons homered to left.

Drew Price gave up to runs in the bottom of the stanza but a double play from Martinez Pagani to Solis to J Crabtree ended the inning. And the Broncos added another run in the second on walks to Derek Vanasse and Martinez Pagani , and a Solis RBI single.

But Price had a rough inning, giving up six more runs to make it 8-5. And while the Hawks shut the NMMI bats down in the third and fourth, Julian Lopez allowed two runs in the third and three in the fourth, before the Broncos added a pair in the fifth on a walk, fielder's choice and home run by Ryan Flake

But Lopez allowed six more Hawk runs in the bottom of the fifth, ending the game under the mercy rule.

Game 2 looked like it might go NMMI's way, as they led 3-1 through four-and-a-half.

Both teams were scoreless in the first, as the Broncos put up two in the second on a solo inside-the-park home run to deep center by Clemons, then a triple by Guillero Borquez and a RBI ground out by A Oliva Velez.

Ty Villareal allowed one run in the bottom of the second, but NMMI made it 3-1 on a second-pitch home run by J Diaz.

The Hawks tied it at 3-3 in the bottom of the third on back-to-back solo home runs off Villareal, and that's where it stayed for another inning and a half.

But Villareal gave up six runs in the bottom of the fifth, giving Howard an 8-3 lead.

The Broncos closed the gap to 8-5 in the sixth when Clemons and Borquez each homered, but in the top of the stanza, reliever A Rubio — who closed out the fifth — allowed three more runs and NMMI couldn't get anything going in the seventh.

Borquez led the offense, going 2-for-3 with two runs, a triple and an RBI on the home run.

The Institute will try to get back on the winning side of the ledger in a Thursday/Friday set of games April 1 and 2 in Midland, Texas.
