The NMMI Colt baseball team won their opening-round game in the 30th Annual Roswell Sertoma Colt Classic tournament, outlasting the Roswell High JV squad, 15-13.

The Institute held a solid 7-1 lead heading into the top fourth, behind the start of right-handed Colt hurler Luis Patron.

NMMI’s first reliever, Noah Martinez then collected two straight outs in the top of the fourth before a Coyote comeback which plated six runs and tied the game before the stanza could be closed out by another NMMI relief pitcher, Grant Maloney.

The Colts outpaced the Coyotes over next two and a half innings, making it a 15-9 contest going into the final top of the seventh.

Another RHS comeback put four runs across the plate. With two outs, but a Coyote on first and the tying run at the plate, the Institute went to their ace Tegin Maloney, who ended the game with a five-pitch strikeout.

Four Institute players had two hits in the game: Nicholas Barcenas was 2-for-5 with two runs and two RBIs; Tegin Maloney went 2-for-2 with two runs and three RBIs; Nicholas Barcelo hit 2-for-3 two runs and two RBIs; and the young sophomore in the nine-spot in the batting order, Caden Carter went 2-for-4 with two runs and three RBIs.

With the win NMMI moves to 5-3 on the season and stays in the winner’s side of the bracket of the Sertoma Colt Classic. They’ll face the Goddard High JV squad tomorrow in a 6:30 pm MDT match-up – the Rockets made quick work of Melrose High School, 14-0, in their tourney opener.
